Bulking Sludge Treatment by Microscopic Observation and Mechanical Treatment

چکیده
By the consideration of the microscopic picture of activated sludge samples it is possible to introduce a further biological parameter apart from the conventional physico-chemical parameters for the evaluation and control of biological stages of waste water treatment plants. It is reported that different parameters have certain influences on the activated sludge floc and on the developing biozenosis. An automatical image analysis of activated sludge floc pictures with the support of algorithms of the digital image processing would enable the introduction of a new sum parameter to support operation control of aeration tanks. By means of the microscopic image possible threatening operational disturbances can be discovered before this is possible with the conventional physico-chemical parameters. In particular, the early automatic recognition of first signs of bulking sludge and swimming sludge caused by the excessive growth of filamentous microorganisms represents an important instrument for the operation of the biological stage of waste water treatment plants. If the threatening extensive growth of filamentous microorganisms is promptly detected, it is e.g. possible to damage the filamentous micro organisms directly by the entry of mechanical energy.

In the activated sludge process, the share of filamentous bacteria is crucial for proper settlement and high sewage treatment efficiency. Disequilibrium of the microbial community may be a reason for the appearance of bulking episodes. During 19 months (August 2007-February 2009) activated sludge samples were collected and analyzed by physicochemical, microscopic, and molecular methods. Amplifi...

Activated sludge process has been widely adopted to remove pollutants in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, stable operation of activated sludge process is often compromised by the occurrence of filamentous bulking. The aim of this study is to build a proper model for timely diagnosis and prediction of filamentous sludge bulking in an activated sludge process. This study developed a ...
متن کاملApplication of Ozone in Wastewater Treatment For Mitigation of Filamentous Bulking Sludge & Reduction of Pharmaceutical Discharge
Wastewater treatment with activated sludge is the most common way of treating wastewater. The process relies on bacteria converting nutrients, BOD and COD into biomass, CO2 and N2. Even though the configuration of activated sludge processes and wastewater treatment plants varies there are common problems which are shared. Filamentous bulking sludge is one problem that is widespread and disturbs...
متن کاملRepetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (REP-PCR) as an alternative method for detection of bulking in activated sludge.
Bulking of activated sludge is a world-wide problem which negatively affects wastewater treatment efficiency. The most common reasons of bulking are bacterial community changes, especially excessive growth of filamentous bacteria (filamentous bulking) or excess of biopolymers on the surface of non-filamentous microbes (non-filamentous or Zoogleal bulking). Because of the complex nature of the b...
